Getting started
A walk through your first psychiatric appointment, from logging in to leaving with a plan
What happens in a first psychiatric appointment, in order: joining the video visit, the questions you will be asked, discussing options, and agreeing on next steps.

What makes it easier
It is a conversation
There is no exam table and nothing to pass. You talk, and Jessica listens and asks questions.
You set the pace
You can share as much as you are ready to. Sensitive topics can wait for a later visit.
You leave knowing what is next
Even when a diagnosis takes more than one visit, you leave with a plan for the near term and a date to check in.
The visit, in order
- 1
Before you join
Find a private spot, check your camera and sound, and have your medication list and notes nearby. Join the secure video link a few minutes early.
- 2
Opening: what brings you in
Jessica asks what led you to book and what you most want help with. There is no wrong way to start.
- 3
Your story
Current symptoms and when they began, sleep and stress, medical history, medications you take now or have tried, family history, and what has helped before.
- 4
Talking through options
If medication could help, you discuss the choices, benefits, and risks. If therapy, coping strategies, or a referral make more sense, you talk about those instead.
- 5
Leaving with a plan
You agree on initial goals and next steps, and schedule a follow-up. If medication is prescribed, it is sent to your pharmacy.
Common questions
How long is a first appointment?
The initial evaluation is a longer visit than a follow-up so there is time to cover your history without rushing. Current visit lengths and self-pay rates are on our Insurance & Pricing page.
Will I get a prescription at the first visit?
Sometimes. If medication is appropriate and safe after the evaluation, it can be prescribed that day. Other times the plan starts with monitoring, therapy, or gathering more information first.
Will I get a diagnosis at the first visit?
Often you will leave with an initial impression and a plan. Some diagnoses become clearer over a few visits as Jessica sees how things change.
Is the first visit by video too?
Yes. Every visit at JRose Wellness is by secure video for patients in Connecticut.
