Before a prescription

Why a psychiatric evaluation comes before any prescription, and what it checks

Why psychiatric medication is never prescribed without an evaluation first: what the evaluation checks, why it protects you, and how soon medication can start.

What the evaluation checks before medication

  • Whether your symptoms fit a diagnosis that medication actually helps
  • Medical conditions that could change which medication is safe
  • Everything else you take, to avoid interactions
  • Past medications: what worked, what did not, and what caused side effects
  • Family history of mental health conditions or medication reactions
  • Your own preferences, because medication is optional

Why it protects you

The right medication for the right problem

Anxiety, ADHD, depression, and bipolar disorder can look alike at first. The wrong medication for the wrong diagnosis can make things worse.

Safety

Interactions and medical contraindications are caught before the first dose, not after.

A relationship, not a transaction

An evaluation starts an ongoing relationship with a prescriber who monitors how you respond and adjusts over time.

Common questions

Can I just get a prescription without an evaluation?

Not at JRose Wellness. Every new patient starts with an evaluation. It is what makes a prescription safe and appropriate, and it is usually the visit where a prescription can be written if medication is the right step.

My primary care provider already prescribes my medication. Why see a psychiatric provider?

Primary care providers prescribe many psychiatric medications well. A psychiatric evaluation adds specialist depth for diagnosis, complex or treatment-resistant cases, and medication selection.

I already know what I want to be prescribed. Does that matter?

Your input matters and will be heard. The final decision follows the evaluation, and for controlled substances it depends on a careful assessment, diagnosis, safety considerations, and state regulations.

How soon after the evaluation can medication start?

If medication is appropriate and safe, it can be prescribed at the evaluation visit. Follow-ups then track how you respond.
